History - Murrieta's city motto is "Gem of the Valley," and it began as cattle grazing land, then experienced a boom of tourism due to a railroad route being built and the hot springs; when those died out, Murrieta was left as a small country town and continues to be a suburban area today. Murrieta's population is 118,005.
