History - Irvine has a varied history of inhabitants beginning with the Gabrieleño indigenous group 2,000 years ago, followed by ownership by the Spanish government and then the Mexican government. The lands were used for ranching, cattle grazing, and farming. After the Mexican-American war and the construction of a railroad through the area, the town was named Irvine in 1914. Irvine's population is 303,956.
